One of our local non-profit organizations - the Hospice Benefit Shop, or HoBS - wanted to draw attention to and freshen up their shop facade without needing to do a remodel. They asked to see a mural design that would create interest on the blank block wall along the rear of their store.
Since the shop features second-hand goods of all types the design that was proposed and accepted drew inspiration from the items available in the store; books, furnishings and clothing being their most prevalent items.
The wall was large enough - measuring over 50 feet long and 16 feet high - that using a projector to transfer the design was not a possibility. Instead of creating a grid on the wall we were actually able to use the lines of the existing blocks to figure building and opening measurements.
The existing wall paint was in good shape so we were able to skip primer, and the paint colors used were all selected from the approved color palette of Historic Prosser, the downtown improvement association the provided a grant to cover part of the cost of the mural.
One of the largest challenges was the weather during the painting process. It was unseasonably warm, and so we had to wait until at least noon each day before painting to allow the wall to be in the shade. Working around this challenge meant that it required a week to complete the mural.
The completed mural faces a parking lot and a busy road, so it's clearly visible to all who pass by. Everyone in the community has been thrilled with the addition of this artwork to what was previously a blank and boring space!
